Introduction
In his compelling sermon titled "Don't Stray Away From God," Apostle General Jannie Ngwale delivered a profound message, reminding us of the devastating consequences of drifting from God's path. Drawing on biblical history and personal reflection, Apostle General encouraged the congregation to stay anchored in faith, emphasizing that separation from God leads to calamity and spiritual desolation.
A Historical Journey: Lessons from Israel
Apostle General began by recounting the journey of the Israelites, drawing a powerful parallel between their experiences and the spiritual battles we face today.
He took the congregation back to 1400 years before Christ, describing how the children of Israel embarked on a journey from Egypt to Canaan, their promised land. The Israelites initially functioned as a confederation of tribes, but in 1020 BC, they united into one nation under King Saul. This unity continued through the reigns of King David and King Solomon, with each ruling for approximately 40 years.
However, the unity that once strengthened them crumbled under the reign of Solomon's son, Rehoboam. The kingdom split into two, the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. The northern kingdom's downfall began when they intermingled and intermarried with surrounding nations, leading them into apostasy. Apostle General warned that, like the Israelites, believers today risk losing their faith when they compromise and intermingle with worldly influences.
The Consequences of Straying
Apostle General stressed that when we stray from God, consequences inevitably follow. The northern kingdom’s disobedience resulted in their downfall, while Judah’s neglect of the poor, widows, and orphans brought God's judgment upon them.
Jeremiah, known as the "weeping prophet," tirelessly warned Judah for 23 years. Despite his pleas, the people ignored his message, leading to the Babylonian exile. King Nebuchadnezzar invaded Judah, destroyed Jerusalem, and took the best and brightest into captivity. For 70 years, the Israelites languished in exile, a powerful reminder of the devastating cost of disobedience.
Hope amid Despair
Despite the judgment, God did not abandon His people. The Apostle General highlighted Jeremiah 29:10-13, where God promises to fulfil His plans for Israel, offering them hope and a future. This passage underscores the importance of seeking God through prayer and repentance.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This message serves as a beacon of hope for all believers, affirming that even in our lowest moments, God’s grace is available to restore us.
Spiritual Distance and Its Signs
Apostle General poignantly addressed the subtle ways in which believers drift away from God. This spiritual distance manifests not only geographically but also through changes in attitude and passion. He urged the congregation to evaluate their spiritual fervour:
Loss of Passion: When believers no longer find joy in attending church or engaging in ministry, it is a sign of spiritual drift.
Carelessness: A diminished concern for living righteously or representing Christ indicates a loss of intimacy with God.
Harshness and Neglect: Harsh treatment of others and a lack of compassion reveal a heart that is distant from God's love.
Restoring Our Relationship with God
To restore passion and intimacy with God, Apostle General called for deliberate action. He encouraged the congregation to return to prayer, fasting, and devotion. Drawing from Matthew 17:19-21, he reminded everyone that certain breakthroughs only come through prayer and fasting.
“There are stubborn things in your life that will not move unless you fast and pray,” he said, urging believers to participate fully in the church’s 21-day fasting period.
The Power of Communion and Prayer
The sermon concluded with Holy Communion, symbolizing the renewal of strength and spiritual stamina. Just as Elijah was sustained for 40 days and nights after receiving divine provision, Apostle General prayed that the congregation would receive renewed strength to overcome life’s challenges.
Key Takeaways:
Stay Close to God: Never allow circumstances or worldly influences to separate you from God.
Evaluate Your Heart: Regularly assess your passion for God and rekindle your love for His presence.
Commit to Prayer and Fasting: Engage in spiritual disciplines to confront and overcome life’s obstacles.
Trust God’s Plan: Even when facing difficulties, remember that God’s plans are to prosper you and give you hope.
As the church embarks on the new year, Apostle General's message stands as a call to remain steadfast in faith, anchored in God’s promises, and vigilant against spiritual drift. By staying close to God, believers can navigate the storms of life and experience the fullness of His blessings.
