As we conclude Youth Month, we reflect on the extraordinary courage and contributions of the youth, particularly recalling the brave acts of June 1976. We celebrate not just their historical significance but also the potential and achievements of our current youth. It is an honour to introduce Bulumko Naphakade, a distinguished member of our church, to deliver this impactful message. With a BCom Honours in Financial Management from the University of Cape Town and as the Managing Director of Wisemen Advisory, Bulumko exemplifies the greatness that can emerge from our youth.
The Significance of Honouring Your Parents
Bulumko’s message centers on a critical yet often challenging topic: the power of honouring your parents. Though deeply rooted in biblical teachings, this principle transcends generations and cultural boundaries. It is particularly relevant to the youth but offers valuable insights for all.
Biblical Foundation
Malachi 4:6 – "He will turn the hearts of parents to their children and the hearts of children to their parents, or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction."
This verse highlights the divine desire for reconciliation between parents and children, emphasizing the preservation of society through this bond. It prophetically underscores the necessity of this reconciliation for societal stability.
Ephesians 6:2-4 – "Honour your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth."
Paul’s message in Ephesians reiterates the importance of honouring parents, linking it directly to the promise of well-being and longevity. He also addresses parents, urging them not to provoke their children to anger but to raise them with discipline and instruction.
The Cultural Context and Challenges
In South Africa, the disjoint between children and their biological parents is significant. Statistics reveal that only 32% of children live with both parents, while a notable portion lives with either one or none. This societal structure poses unique challenges to the concept of honouring parents.
Embracing the Principle of Honour
Honouring your parents is not dependent on the perfection of the relationship but is an act of obedience to a divine principle. It involves respect, which stimulates God’s promises over one’s life, ensuring well-being and longevity.
Case Study of David – Despite facing rejection from his father, David continued to honour him. This respect, even in difficult circumstances, was a key factor in his anointment and success as king.
Jesus Christ – Even Jesus, who was about his Heavenly Father’s business, submitted to his earthly parents, setting an example of humility and honour.
The Efficacy of Honouring Parents
Stimulates God’s Promises – Honouring parents activates divine promises of prosperity and long life.
Reflects Character – Disrespect towards parents is a negative reflection on the individual and not the parent, it invites God’s judgment.
Preserves Society – Ensuring the structural integrity of society through honouring the family unit.
Addressing Difficult Relationships
Even in strained relationships, the act of honouring parents can catalyze change. The Holy Spirit can work through this honour to bring about reconciliation and transformation in the demeanour of parents.
Call to Action:
Let's reflect on our relationships with our parents and seek reconciliation where needed. Honour your parents not just as a duty but as a divine principle that brings blessings and preserves our society. Join us in embracing this message and transforming our lives through the power of honour.
Conclusion
Bulumko’s message is a clarion call to the youth and all congregants to honour their parents, regardless of the circumstances. This principle, deeply embedded in biblical teachings, promises to bring well-being and longevity, ensuring God’s favour in our lives. Let us take this message to heart and practice the timeless principle of honouring our parents, fostering a society rooted in respect and divine blessings.
